Roadfly.com – 2012 Porsche Cayman R Test Drive & Car Review

The 2012 Porsche Cayman R was one of the most-anticipated cars to ever come through the Roadfly office. The car’s stats are simply stunning: 0-60mph in 4.7 sec. 330hp @ 7500rpm, 2855 lb. Even the door handles have been replaced with nylon tabs to reduce weight. The results are predictable. The Cayman R is virtually telepathic, to the point that it nearly bores you. It’s so free of vice that you start to feel that it’s just like a normal, civilized car, with a tad more immediacy…and you wonder what the big deal is. Only when you go back to your daily driver do you realize how responsive the Cayman actually is. It’s a nearly perfect machine. It makes few compromises that interfere with spirited driving, but still manages to be completely docile, tractable, and even practical with its two trunks and stellar reliability. It also gets great fuel mileage, at 19 city and 27 highway when equipped with the 6-speed manual. Ever gone to a movie that didn’t blow you away at first, but weeks later you’re still thinking about it and can’t get it out of your head? That’s what my days with the Cayman R left me with. This car is definitely on my ‘short list’ of cars I want to own before I die. It’s slightly expensive with a starting MSRP of 300, but given how well-built Porsches are in general and how good their resale values are, the price is fair in my opinion. 3. IchiDeux says:

Porsches aren’t very big cars but Ross looks like a kid in it. How tall is he? 5ft?

  4. AudiABTr8 says:

@Hughett07 If you want to actually buy, why not check it out yourself?

    Nice review.

The fact you put yourself in there AND fit…..made my day….awesome….now the new standard is how many of you can fit into a trunk….ditch the laundry basket rating!

  7. fsx767 says:

You guys make it look so sexy from 0:07-0:20!

  8. Hughett07 says:

How tall are you? You look like you fit extremely comfortable in this car. I am thinking about purchasing one myself, but I am 6’4″ and around 190lbs. Do you think I’ll have a problem fitting?

    great review.
i like the new intro format.
i agree with the person that said, “tan those legs”

  11. LouwrensStassen says:

But isn’t the 1M still faster in a drag race though? I would then think that it might have that sporty feel after all…

  12. yzoooon says:

Porsches are hot cars but their not safe, for crash BOOM and your gone! Well .. Except for the Cayenne and the Panamera.

  13. brikag says:

    @dcengland I’m shaking!

  14. dcengland says:

@jonsimcoe Thanks for the information. Ill pay for a round of golf if you give me a ride some time

  15. dcengland says:

@brikag what are you even talking about? It was a simple question of the cars practicality. Ross mentions in the video the Corvette which can easily hold two golf bags. So I was curious to see how the Porsche compares. If you buy a Cayman it usually means you couldnt afford the 911. It also might means you bought the Cayman as an everyday car. And no i dont belong to a country club or wear silly pants or anything like that. and you’re really reading to much into this Stop hating

  16. KonaKoo says:

    Ross, you’re such a little cutie :)

  17. peruface says:

Can he see out the car??

  18. gcavy1 says:

Never understood the door handle deletion..are there really losing much weight from a freaking door handle? As as bike rider, why not Titanium bolts at the wheels, or the lithium-ion battery??
    Seems silly.

  19. legops says:

    So, no engine?

  20. 2003SCT says:

No a/c on any street vehicle is silly…the weight difference isn’t that big of a deal on a street car. Get rid of door handles, add cf panels and sure, even get rid of the radio maybe. But heat and a/c gotta stay:)

  21. 2003SCT says:

Could you imagine if you were in the front trunk and you got into a front collision….owwww. :(

  22. smp336 says:

    Ur reviews are the best

  23. TypeR1013 says:

Guys, thanks so much for all the kind words. I definitely think this is the best video we’ve ever done, we have a really good editor (obviously) and our camera guys are top-notch as well.

  24. brikag says:

@dcengland If you have golf bags….you don’t deserve this car!!!!! Whatta DORK! Honestly. You want to show off at the country club? You know….. I watched Tom Cruise and Justin Beiber doing the nasty in a S&M dungeon on a sling, and your comment is still the gayest thing I’ve seen! “Can this car carry 2 normal golf bags?” I mean REALLY!?!?!?!?! Seriously. That’s why there’s a national Hate Douche Bags day! “Can this car carry 2 normal golf bags?” That’s rich.

  25. jonsimcoe says:

@dcengland I have a Cayman S (same luggage capacity). I was just golfing today with 2 sets of clubs. You have to take the drivers out of the golf bags and lay them across the back. Also, the front still has enough room for a medium size suit case. Believe it or not, but it holds more luggage than the trunk of a new Honda Accord.
