2009 Porsche 911 Engine Oil Sump Test Rig

www.edmunds.com Test: 2009 Porsche 911 Engine Oil Sump Test Rig Location: Porsche Research and Development Center, Weissach, Germany. The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S mark the debut of Porsche’s latest flat-six engine architecture. During the development of its next-generation of engines, Porsche created a test rig to evaluate oiling system enhancements. This rig replicates the g-forces experienced by a 911 on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe circuit.

Ferraris latest 562bhp V8 Berlinetta has changed the way we think about sports cars – its the first of a new, digital breed. The Porsche 997 GT3 RS is perhaps even more stunning on road than it is on track. Its ingredients are more basic, but its appeal is infectious. Theyre not direct rivals, but theyre two of the most exciting high performance cars well drive all year. Chris Harris attempts to adjudicate.

gotta say that is very clever.

  2. TheWhupper says:

Still a piece of unreliable crap. Porsche lost it’s way after the 993. Now it’s part of VE.

  3. 94jettameowpsst says:

@EdaP79 the only reason this is possible is because damn near all porsches i’ve seen at least have a dry sump…..which is a COMPLETELY different oiling system. I think from the flat 6 in a 20yr old car to the new ones, they use between like 10-16qts of oil lol

@xilix how about more HP while having a larger mileage?

  6. EdaP79 says:

Man thats some serious testing holy crap, good way to find what makes it break or how well the internals hold up to the massive power and lateral forces starving engine of oil? Coooooool

  7. TheHardstyleHanfry says:

    was esnciht alles gibt ey

  8. MadazRx8 says:

@87tomify tell me what you put in it then? sand to keep your bores smooth

  9. Chingchi says:

    @NBSV1 Exactly dude, well put.

  10. Chingchi says:

@Chingchi This angle is then used to level the rig and simulate the G’s of the corner.

  11. Chingchi says:

@bobwatters Yes, correct. It’s called centripetal acceleration: acceleration induced by having a velocity following a curve (a = (v^2)/r, where a is acceleration, v velocity and r radius of curvature of the corner). But acceleration can be generated too by this rig. What you need to do is you assume you have 1G of acceleration in downwards direction (gravity) and whatever lateral G’s that you expect to generate at the curves. Then, you find the angle of the resultant acceleration vector…

  12. mattblack77nz says:

@xilix Love and hate are yin and yang – they need each other to survive

  13. bobwatters says:

@Fortatus speed goin into corners creates g forces

  14. Fortatus says:

@bobwatters It not speed what creates g forces. It’s acceleration. And as long as you dont have a moving engine test rig, using earth gravity for acceleration is the only thing you can do
Another way would be to design a spinning test rig as NASA uses it for acceleration test for astronauts. But that would be big, heavy, expensive and most important: very unreactive as you have to slow down and speed up for different accelerations. And a carussel that weights 10tons+ isnt that easy to slow/speed

  15. 87tomify says:

actually engines dont need oil, its only a fraud made by oil and car companies so they will earn more money.

  16. bobwatters says:

@trevplaydrums06 no im not the speed is what creates the g forces jackass not tilting somethin from left to right its goin into a hard corner at 90mph that makes g forces

i mean yes it can make the oil run from one side to another but i highly doubt that its the same as actual gforces

plus only jackasses answer with sayin someone is stupid with no proff that they are or that u know what ur talkin about

  17. trevplaydrums06 says:

    @bobwatters You’re fuckin retarded…

  18. bobwatters says:

i dont see how this could reproduce the actual g forces without the speed

  19. TrabantDaniel says:

Porsche looks way more fun to drive. I love the 911 Turbo. This guy is gives excellent reviews like Top Gear. He has a genuine passion for sports cars and is insightful in his choice of words and information and personal opinions. He says it in ways that average guys like me who can’t afford these cars can at least feel what he’s doing and feeling behind the wheel.

  27. NEROROYAL says:

@namybot Yes my friend i think you summed it up perfectly. Beautiful vehicles and equally important to us petrol heads…………………….simple!!! I think on this occassion I would opt for the Ferrari because it definitely is more of an every day car than the GT3 RS and I’m with Chris Harris the Ferrari 458 should be driven everyday (it’s one of the few Ferrari’s that can be) however I love the involvement and excitability of the Porsche which I would want to use for the race track!!!

  28. HoodooFX says:

Thumbs up if you would just have both of them. :D

  29. 6r390r says:

@MRRRKOOLLL as for me (I am a man) ferrari is more feminine, it just want to controls everything to gave you the best lap, and porsche got character and maybe is more demanding from the driver but gaves you the great feelings (like when you hit the tennis ball with the right place on your tennis rocket). it is like comparing CD to Vinyl. sound from CD is clear but cold and kinda sterilised like from the lab, and the sound from Vinyl got a soul and unexplained barely transcendental feeling

  30. mada9898 says:

Thumbs up for the slow mo shots there awesome!

  31. farizster says:

Harris being a Porsche fanboy aside, I think we can all see from the outside view that he was enjoying himself in the Porsche more, and honestly, when it comes to picking sportscars I feel that the smile you get when you step out is a huge huge factor.

  32. daedal212 says:

I’m partial to the Porsche & what it stands for and would have any of there cars but I am in complete awe of what Ferrari has accomplished with their latest cars, the 599 GTO & now this 458.

  33. karkass4 says:

no doubt Harris is one of the finest reviewers.
Choice? Porsche once and forever. Ferrari is too much in the direction of Posh Spice Kitty Girl. Ok, F1, so what? Couple of recent seasons benn ruled by post-Honda Brawn team or Renault engines in RBR, not Ferrari. Porsche is simpler and better. Remember Carrera GT… my God, Ferrari never will stand up to this standard. Get me right: 348, f40 and f50 are cars im wholeheartedly addicted to. But GT3 RS is like almighty bear while the 458 is plastik

  34. monsterenergy713 says:

I’d take the Ferrari any day. I have huge respect for the 911 and I love how you have to drive the car properly for it to really reward you but that Ferrari is just amazing

  35. gmanzeroalpha says:

@edge160 Analogue and digital is about feedback of information to the driver. He is saying that the porsche is feeding you what is happening at the road, the Ferarri is translating what is happening. If you want to FEEL the bumps that are there your a Porsche man, if you want to have them smoothed your a Ferrari man.

  36. edge160 says:

This British dude is mixing cars with HiFi: analog vs digital. In Hifi terms, it’s like he’s talking about turntable/vinyl/tube (porsche) vs. CDs/solid state (ferrari).

  37. jonbarross says:

    i love porsches… some day i will buy one… maybe two… i cant forget cayene…

  38. Dfrogman says:

@MRRRKOOLLL I love the Porsche but I kinda agree with you. However, I don’t think “safe” is the right word?

  39. nielsboex says:

I’ll take the Porsche. (if I could)

  40. MRRRKOOLLL says:

Actually I’d have neither of these two, I’d rather have the Ferrari California or 599!

  41. Beetuber says:

What a brilliant video. Pure quality, great commentary and shooting. GT3 gets the nod from me. Ferrari is to techo while the gt3 is still a ‘proper’ hands on race car. I could not give a fuck for computer aided driving. On country blasts on the weekend, you’re not going to miss tenths of a second.

  42. jammo6163 says:

Simple truth about these two cars:
If you can afford one im 90% sure you can afford the other one to.

  43. asvestomixZ says:

    @asvestomixZ !

  44. asvestomixZ says:

    cool i love them both

  45. radost0514 says:

@ALKIS84 yes porsche is incredible car but it hasent change from 10 years :)

  46. rmesquita2 says:

Porsche is a more car , Ferrari is more a electronic car

  47. ALKIS84 says:

ferrari : always know how to impress!!!!!
porsche : just another a little faster than the last one but for me are all the same

At the 458 fallen Buttoms out of Console and the dashboard begin to chappering at 200kmh. The Car is verified EXTREMELY bad !

Ferrari cut Costs in the Production.Fiat STILO Parts in Interiour and they put cheap Glue in Place of blanks in the Engine. The final product :

    The best Ferrari ever(If u want a burning Engine!)xD

Ferrari cant longer compare with the German Supercars and they got no longer enough Money to make good Cars after the 458 dissapointment.

All the losers who diss the ferrari or the porsche has one thing in common, they have never owned either one of those amazing cars.
