How often does automobile brake horsepower double?

Question by Matthew G: How often does automobile brake horsepower double?
Maybe there’s not a certain time. Was just thinking about how they used to say computing power doubled every such a such a time length. Is there a similar length of time for hp? Does it depend on whether it’s a family sedan or a performance car? Will some limit be reached on what will be sold commonly or will the fuel be the limiting factor?

theres no saying that I am aware of. I know that GM v8 engines (at least the small block chevy versions) have went from 275 in the later 80s to over 500 now. So, not a whole lot has really happend there, but the 4cylnder engines, have went up alot. 90 used to be the norm, now they are hitting 250+hp
